CBSE amends Class X and XII board examination pattern for 2024

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made changes to the Class X and XII board examination pattern. Based on this new revision of the examination, students will be answering more multiple-choice questions in their 2024 board exams. The revision in the examination pattern is being made in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Based on the NEP 2020 vision, CBSE has already announced that it would include more competency-based questions in the Class X and XII board examinations. As per this decision the board will offer more competency-based questions to Class X and XII students in their board examinations which will be based more on real-life applications.

Based on the new guidelines CBSE will compose the Class IX, X, XI and XII question papers with 20% of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) from the 2023-24 academic session. For classes IX and X CBSE will increase the weightage of the competency-based questions. In the current academic session these questions are at 30% of the question paper. For the 2023-24 session, 50% of the questions would be MCQs. For classes X and XII, 40% of the questions will be competency-based from the 2023-24 academic session. The constructed response questions – short answer and long answer questions as per the existing pattern, would be 30% of the question paper for classes IX and X and 40% for classes XI and XII.
